Fruits and vegetables are essential foods for our diet. They contain many nutrients that are required for normal function of our organs. Nevertheless, we are not aware that they might be filled with pesticides. Pesticides are primarily used during the cultivation of crops and in some cases may remain as residues. Recently, tests were performed on fruits and vegetables and were found unacceptably high amounts of pesticide residue in them. High levels of pesticide residues can be toxic enough to cause long-term cancer, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems, birth defects, and damage of the immune system.
Farmers and vendors must be aware of the side effects from using pesticides. Their produced food, if contains pesticides is not healthy at all. Therefore, organic food is highly recommended by health experts. Even though the mere presence of pesticide residue in food does not imply that they pose a great health risk, be extremely careful of what you buy and where you buy it from. You should also take certain measures to minimize any kind of health damage.
Below are given simple tips, that you can do at home:
Wash Your Food
Wash carefully all your fruits and vegetables. Washing them with 2% of salt water will remove most of the contact pesticide residues that normally appear on the surface of the vegetables and fruits. Almost 75 to 80 percent of pesticide residues are removed by cold water washing. Also, be more thorough with these fruits and vegetables in specific: grapes, apples, guava, plums, mangoes, peaches and pears and vegetables liketomatoes, brinjal and okra as they might carry more residue in their crevices.
Mix 10 percent white vinegar and 90 percent water and soak your veggies and fruits in them. Stir them around and rinse thoroughly. Be careful while washing fruits like berries, and those with a thin peel as the solution might damage their porous outer-skin.
Blanch and Peel
Put the vegetables under warm water for a short period and with this you will remove any leftover residue. Peeling is another efficient way to remove residue and comes highly recommended especially when there might be some residue in the crevices of the fruit. Also, if you are cooking with chicken or other type of meat, cut off the excess fat and skin as it could have absorbed unwanted pesticide residue.
Spend a little more time on washing your food and you will remove any harmful pesticides that might be present. You can apply any of the above mentioned procedures, even with organic food.
